Background
CAB Direct is the most thorough and extensive source of reference in the applied life sciences. Semantico’s brief from CABI was to build a website for CAB Direct to give access to CABI’s leading bibliographic databases in life science information – CAB Abstracts and Global Health.Objective
CABI’s main objective was to re-engineer the existing CAB Direct platform to improve user experience and discoverability of information by employing the latest and most powerful search technologies and by optimizing the use of CABI’s classification and indexing.

Solution
The scope of the project was to:
- Redevelop the CAB Direct Platform, including some new feature additions
- Deliver a seamless means of integration with Internet Resources
- Provide hosting and support services
Outcomes
- The creation of MyCABDirect – a personalised area where users can set up email alerts and RSS feeds based on their search results; share information; and save important searches
- Faceted searching – users can finely filter information to fit their research needs, based on CABI’s valuable indexing terms and metadata
- The capability to view full text at the search results level
- Improved user experience, through a more intuitive interface
- Suggestions for spelling variations incorporating terminology from CABI’s Thesaurus
- Abstract snippet views at search results level
- Save searches to social book marking sites
- COUNTER compliant usage statistics
- Giving users access to 9 million bibliographic and full text applied life science articles that are hand picked by CABI’s expert team and updated weekly

McGraw-Hill Professional
ProjectAccessEngineering 3.0
Background
Semantico was selected by global financial information and education company, McGraw-Hill Professional, to deliver a large scale redesign of McGraw-Hill’s AccessEngineering following a comprehensive search by McGraw-Hill earlier in 2011.
McGraw-Hill has been a leader in providing highly valuable engineering information for more than 100 years to students and professionals. Today, its web-based platform includes such valuable resources as Perry’s Handbook for Chemical Engineers, Marks’ Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, and Roarks Formulas for Stress and Strain.
The project will focus on redesigning the current online library to increase the growing multi-media and information needs of engineering customers.
Objectives
The brief was to redesign the existing AccessEngineering site in order to showcase the vast range of renowned engineering content and to display this in an engaging interactive, multimedia formats.The new AccessEngineering site will:
- Feature remote access for library patrons
- Allow users easy access to the wealth of knowledge on the site via a customer-centric design
- Use a multi-media format to engage and captivate users
- Provide textual annotation and highlight features
- Have a search-based interface with rich semantic linking to generate relevant results
- Display content and results in an innovative and visually appealing way
- Feature social media integration
- Contain all the latest engineering news feeds through ENR.com
- Provide an enterprise access management system featuring counter compliant usage statistics, referrer URL, username passwords, Shibboleth, IP access, mobile passports and more
- Support an e-commerce system

Solution
Semantico’s solution will be built using a combination of their own acclaimed tailor-made packages: SIPP2 platform and SAMS (Semantico’s Access Management System).

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford. It furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.
Semantico was chosen to work on OUP’s PASSIt project following a competitive pitch / due to their ongoing working relationship with Oxford University Press.Objectives
To deliver two distinct web applications:
- A subscription based platform, offering practice questions and mock exams for Junior doctors to prepare for membership or fellowship exams.
- A question engine platform, which will provide a tool through which questions can be generated and approved through a permissions-based workflow.
Audience
Junior doctors and medical professionals.
Solution
To use a combination of Semantico products: SAMS and SIPP2.
Outcomes

The Grup Enciclopèdia Catalana (EC) was established in Barcelona in 1965 to grow and promote Catalan culture and language. Since its inception, the group has collated an extensive body of work including encyclopedias, dictionaries, school text books, fiction and non-fiction works.Semantico was selected by EC as the digital development partner in a major project to publish their extensive range of encyclopedic, academic and literary works online following a competitive pitch in early 2011.Objectives
